21st Century Literacy

Have a look. Are we addressing in our classes what it is to be literate in the 21st century? When watching this, it confirmed to me that our literacy programmes need to be wide and address a range of media, as our students are receiving information in a variety of forms these days. What are your thoughts?

  2. I am trying my best to move with the times. Although I am a bit behind with all the new technology, I will get there. Kylie has taught me a lot this year with regards to ICT, and I am making baby steps in the right direction for now, but you gotta start somewhere.

  3. This the first year I have introduced a range of media into my literacy programme, and I have only just touched the surface of what I need to do. It is very exciting though!

  4. I believe that more than ever, we need to be educating students how to be 'critical thinkers'. With the enormous volumes of information and influences they are exposed to, in all kinds of media, they need to be able to discern what is true, what messages are being conveyed, how does this information fit with my belief system ... asking a range of questions about the information they are exposed to, not just believing it because someone else said it or wrote it. Literacy, therefore, becomes less about the form (written, spoken, visual) but more about its meaning and influence. Literate students will be students who are in control of their exposure to media, because they are constantly evaluating and critiquing it.
